It’s the year of our Lord, 2022. I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky since 2 am. After many years of unsuccessful launches and trying to get back into the open-universe exploration world, I am finally back. And reader, I am hooked.

No Man’s Sky’s disappointing launch in 2016 has been extensively covered elsewhere. I don’t need to bore you with it again. I will admit that I enjoyed the game’s foundation at the time. I spent a lot of time upgrading my starship, exploring new galaxies, and finally realized it was just a little bit empty. You have that moment when you realize it’s time for you to pack it up before you get sick.

It’s well known that Hello Games has been on an epic journey of redemption over the past few years. This took No Man’s Sky from an embarrassing cautionary tale into one of the planet’s most exciting and thrilling games. The game has been updated with many new content and characters, crafting, multiplayer, mech suits, and much more.

While I know this information, I am curious how many people have given the game another chance. I tried a few times to get back in the game but was unsuccessful. I never got to the new content. This was a mistake. No Man’s Sky feels completely new – it’s closer to Skyrim in space than I expected.

While I do not doubt that I’m preaching to the choir here in some cases, I urge you to play No Man’s Sky again if you haven’t since 2016. Last weekend, I lost my whole Saturday when I started a new game on my PlayStation 5. You can be sure that I will do it again this weekend.

The core of No Man’s Sky remains unchanged. Explore a vast array of planets and scan the local fauna and mining resources to improve your ship and gear. This magnetic base is now layered over a galaxy of endless possibilities.

In 2016, my first ten hours spent in No Man’s Sky back involved zipping between barren Moons, finding enough resources for warp fuel and then going to new galaxies with more barren Moons. Sometimes I would find an ocean or a jungle planet if I was fortunate, but it was still relatively empty.

My first ten hours in No Man’s Sky in the year 2022. I found an ancient portal to save a traveller stuck between worlds. I built a base in deep red grass and saved a freighter from space pirates. Then, I flew headfirst into the black hole to see what would happen.
