Snake is the player’s control, and he must navigate the map to complete the missions. Enemies cannot spot him. The threat detection system is revamped, removing the onscreen meter or gauge to indicate the player that they are in the ‘alert/evasion/caution’ state as in previous games, which have instead been replaced by visual and audio representations. Snake’s binoculars were also redesigned. Instead of being selected as an item, they can be hot keyed to a single button.
The iDroid’s holographic display allows the player to identify enemies and track their location. When an enemy is seen from a distance or gets closer to the player, directional cues can be used to assist. When An enemy finds snake, a new reflex mode activates. The player has only a limited time to eliminate the enemy before the alarm sounds. To aid in stealth, lights can be fired out.
Ground Zeroes has seven missions, each locked at different levels. The player will complete the main mission. Four additional missions, known as “Side Ops”, will be unlocked at different times in the day. They are all located in Camp Omega. These missions require the player to complete specific tasks such as obtaining classified information or eliminating targets. After completing the main mission, the player can unlock two extra “Extra Ops” missions.
