Overview of HAAK
Welcome to HAAK. A world filled with dangers and contraptions. A dangerous mutant walks the land while dark forces lurk in the shadows. The game takes place on a planet that has been devastated by disaster. The once great city is now in ruins, and survivors are fighting for survival. A land called Sanho in the south has largely escaped the effects of the disaster due to its unique geographic environment. It has become a refuge. Haak is a traveler who came from a small town in northern Norway. He left his hometown to seek refuge in the south.
Haak is an exploration game that combines action-platformer gameplay and Metroidvania. You can traverse the land using your hook, dash, and charged slash. Hand-drawn graphics featuring unique characters. For a comic-esque look, this pixel world has a retro and futuristic feel. Haak left me with good taste after all was said and done. The tactical action platforming was intuitive and fun, and the puzzles were easy without overwhelming. The visuals are pleasing to the eye, combining pixel art and a cartoonish style. The game is lacking in enemy variety, and the lore is disappointing. It’s difficult to predict how the story will end as it is still incomplete.

HAAK is set in the ruins of a long-gone capital city and contains all the elements you would expect from a post-apocalyptic setting. Quarantine zones, managed by government agencies, are the closest thing to civilized communities. The wastes are home to robots, marauder gangs, and other slimy creatures. Its Chinese setting is what keeps it from becoming clichéd. Its visuals combine traditional pixel art and cartoonish graphics to create a distinctive but familiar style. It is a dark and bleak setting, but it manages to bring some light into the world with bright colors popping up now and again, almost like a sign of hope. You can access four areas in the current version. They also highlight the social hierarchies in a world where humanity is at the edge of extinction.
