Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Might Finish What Skyward Sword Started
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2Link will face off against the forces of evil again, but with a twist. The upcoming game’s map will allow Link to explore Hyrule and take him to large floating islands high above the kingdom. In the E3 trailer, Hyrule Castle is seen floating above the ground in its first trailer. Many Zelda fans immediately thought of an earlier Zelda game when all the talk about floating islands and flight was mentioned. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
The connection may be deeper than what surface-level similarities suggest. The Legend of Zelda 2: Breath of the Wild 2 could be the final chapter in Skyward Sword’s story and bring many themes from the previous game to its conclusion. Let’s see how these titles might fit together and what the implications could have for Breath Of The Wild 2.

Skyward Sword as An Origin Story
The Legend of Zelda timeline can be more difficult to track down than other series. Majoras Mask and Ocarina of Time both use the same Link incarnation, so the latter can be considered a direct sequel. It is not clear where some games are placed, but Skyward Sword is a part of the origin story of the Zelda Link-Ganondorf dynamic.
Skyward Sword is the first game in Hyrule’s history. It establishes Zelda and Link as the incarnations of Hylia, Ganondorf as Ganondorf’s avatar, and Ganondorf as the Demon King Demise. He claims that his hatred will be revived after he is defeated. It is strongly implied that the various versions of Ganon that are seen in the Legend of Zelda franchise of the Legend of Zelda are new manifestations of Demise’s hatred that he has harbored since he conflicted with Hylia, later Link.
The backstory of Skyward Sword reveals that Demise was a being that had conquered the time. The Golden Goddesses left Hyrule to give the Triforce over to Hylia. They entrusted it to her protection. Demise attempted to seize the Triforce with Hylia as his only defense. Demise was finally sealed for good by Hylia, the five Hyrule tribes, and the conflict.
Link defeated Demise for the first time after he managed to free himself from his chains. He stated in his final moments that his hatred would return to conquer Hyrule generation after generation. Ganondorf’s appearance is even more like Demise’s, with Demise having his fiery hair replaced with Ganon’s red hair.
Skyward Sword And BOTW2 Connections
Ganondorf is specifically a reincarnation of Demise’s hatred, not necessarily of Demise himself. This could allow him to be seen as a victim in some way, doomed to pursue conquest over and over again, and almost always facing defeat. While Ganondorf’s theories could be a player character in Breath of the Wild 2 may stray too far from the franchise’s formula, it would make sense to see the more human side of Ganon in the sequel. The first Breath of the Wild‘s villain was Calamity Ganon, a version of the iconic character with barely a shred of humanity left in him, physically or otherwise.
More Breath Of The Wild 2 Theories
The same thing happening to both the villain and the hero might point to their connection throughout the series. However, the mysterious magic in the trailer could also call back to the far larger forces at play in Skyward Sword, dealing with the sery’s main conflict at a more fundamental level than the games have since Skyward Sword‘s story.
The avatars of Demise and Hylia may finally become detached from the forces behind them in Breath of the Wild 2. Ganondorf could become separated from the Malice controlling him or Demise’s hatred. The green hand that appears multiple times in the trailers could be the Goddess Hylia, separated from Princess Zelda. With sound effects also hinting at time travel, however, the identity of the being behind the green hand could get even more complicated.
Some have speculated that the green hand could be Ganon, or even Link himself using time travel in Breath of the Wild 2 to keep Ganondorf imprisoned. Unfortunately, the full details will likely have to wait until the game’s release. With the return of other elements from Skyward Sword, however, many fans hope to see a resolution to the cycle of reincarnation that has defined so much of the series so far, even if future games take place before Breath of the Wild and explore the classic dynamic again.
