Warzone Operation Monarch: Another Overwhelming Spectacle

The anticipation surrounding the latest limited-time event (LTE), was high after weeks of teasers revealing the arrival of Godzilla in Warzone. The event that featured Krampus, the Christmas devil, gained attention for its annoyance and Raven Software failed to live up to the hype.

Fortnite’s massive events have prompted the idea of an in-game spectacular event. Warzone events are often not up to this standard, whether it’s Travis Scott performing a virtual concert or a robot flossing an amphibious creature to mark a season’s end.

Operation Monarch suggested a showdown between the titans, but players continue to drop in Caldera, reducing any chance of a full-blown war on the Pacific island.

Another underwhelming spectacle

Although they are not allowed to interact with Godzilla or Kong, their presence on this map is definitely intimidating. Godzilla watches the coast, while Kong leaps great distances during matches. If you are too close to one of the titans, it is an instant elimination. However, the Titan Frenzy events allow players to choose to stay put or run from the action. Running and hiding is not an option with the possibility of Godzilla’s heat ray harnessing or Kong’s ability to throw boulders wherever they want. Even though Godzilla and Kong make it seem small, I soon forget about them.

A missed opportunity

The trailers that preceded Operation Monarch’s launch seemed to confirm a battle between two giants. However, with Godzilla appearing in shallow water and Kong soaring over Peak every few minutes it was clear that conflict is possible. I felt more like something was happening when the Battle of Verdansk promotional event for Call of Duty Vanguard did a better job of making me feel that it was. It was a spectacle with the bombs destroying the map and the roaring aircrafts overhead.

Instead of 15 teams playing in a Quads match under the watchful eye of Kong and Godzilla it might be a good idea for players to join forces to save Caldera. Quads mode that includes elements from Operation Monarch is still possible, but it’s not ideal for players who want to see the monsters make large-scale changes to the map.
