Warframe Developer Announces Soulframe – A New Fantasy Game
Digital Extremes’ Soulframe, a new game, shares at least one very obvious similarity with the developer’s biggest hit, Warframe. We do not have any details at the moment, but we do know that it is a fantasy title. This is a significant departure from the fantasy, but still sci-fi world of Warframe. Although the names might suggest that they share some similarities, it is unlikely.
Developers have more connective tissue. Digital Extremes has many members working on this project. Soulframe is being managed by Steve Sinclair, former Warframe director. Rebb Ford, who has been the face and voice behind the Warframe development teams, will be taking over as the new creative director of this science fiction epic. She’s been in this role for some time.
Ford revealed during a preview of TennoCon 2022 as well as an interview with Fanbyte, that she has been working “in secret” in the Creative Directive position since February this year. Halfway through the game’s long-awaited The Duviri Paradox updates, she took over development. Although Veilbreaker, the first major update completely overseen by her will launch earlier, it is not yet available. If you are keeping track, more information about that will be available in August.
Soulframe, for its part, will be the first Digital Extremes game that is completely original in nearly a decade. The Warframe game was launched by the developer in 2013. It then developed the Star Trek tie-in game, which was based on J.J. Abrams’ reboot. This received mixed reviews. Digital Extremes also co-developed Sword Coast Legends which was set in “Forgotten Realms” Dungeons and Dragons. This game received mixed reviews in 2015.
Beyond that, there was no new Digital Extremes project. The Amazing Eternals is a first-person shooter that was very funny and announced in 2017. It was cancelled shortly after because of a lack of interest. This happened both in the closed beta and in other multiplayer first-person shooters that were released during this era. Most notable LawBreakers. The studio can’t be blamed for this, either. The competition for shooters is just as brutal today as it was a decade ago.
Warframe has always placed a greater emphasis on cooperative play. Although there is some PVP content, it is a small part of the game when compared to PVE missions. Players will find random drops that can be used to make weapons and mods or unlock more Warframes. The game has a very dense and detailed story behind the grind.
It is impossible to predict how much of this will translate into Soulframe. The developer did however give a small glimpse of the game along with its TennoCon 2022 announcements. It would be odd for the game to share half its name with Warframe. But that’s marketing. As more information becomes available, we’ll post more Soulframe (and Warframe).
