REMAKING MAXPAYNE GAMES FEELS LIKE A “HOMECOMING” TO REMEDY

Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy, has described the recent announcement by Rockstar to be a partner for Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes as a “homecoming” for the Finnish developer.

Virtala was questioned by investors about why Remedy decided to take on the work-for-hire job of remaking its first games rather than having a team concentrate on a new IP. He pointed out many good reasons. The most important of these is “It’s Max Payne. It’s like a homecoming to us.” .

Virtala stated it was healthy for Remedy to have multiple autonomous leadership teams working on different projects at once. Max Payne’s DNA is the core of Remedy’s work to this day. It’s also a good way to experiment with the new toolsets that the developer uses in its games. It’s good business for everyone.

Although Virtala was happy to take on such a project financially, he wanted to emphasize that it had to be the right fit for what Remedy is and does. It must have hit the right chord for everyone, given that Rockstar has provided an AAA-worthy budget for Max Payne’s project. This will see the two titles combined into one package.

It is still early in development for the Max Payne remakes, so we won’t know until then how this union turns out. Rockstar would benefit from a solid remake after the disastrous GTA Trilogy remasters last year.
