Netflix’s Ad-Supported Tier will have some shows and movies missing
Netflix has decided to introduce adverts in response to record-breaking subscriber departures.
To clarify, Netflix is rolling out ads as part of a new, lower tier. If you already have a regular subscription, you won’t find four of five dentists suggesting Colgate suddenly. Netflix is trying to make it cheaper, but you’ll have to watch ads.
It remains to be determined what kind of ads will we see as part of the new subscription tier. We know that Netflix has partnered with Microsoft to be its global advertising technology and sales partner, though this is still early days.
Including ads may not be the most challenging part of Netflix’s new ad-supported tier.
Ted Sarandos, chief content officer and co-CEO of Netflix, stated that the new tier would lack some Netflix licensed content.
Sarandos stated that “the vast majority of Netflix content can be included in the ad-supported tier.” “We will remove some content, but not all of it. But we don’t consider it a material hindrance to the business.”
Netflix original shows, such as Stranger Things and Sex Education and The Umbrella Academy, – will all be safe. Sarandos also points out that original shows are what most people subscribe to in the first place. However, Netflix’s licensees of movies and shows – Friends and Community, as well as various superhero movies – are less certain.
We don’t know which licensed shows will be removed from the mix, but there will likely be severe losses. The new tier may be the best option for those who want to watch Netflix’s latest shows at a lower price and don’t care too much about other things.
