Kentucky Route Zero is a segmented adventure video game. It was released originally in 2013, and was completed in 2020. It was also portable to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Kentucky Route Zero TV Edition. The story is about a trucker on a roadtrip across America in order to deliver antiques at an address in Kentucky. It’s a simple idea, but it turns out to be very strange very quickly. It is exciting to see Cardboard Computers’ new project actually become a reality. It is truly amazing to see a small group of friends work together on an ambitious next step in this thoughtful story. Kentucky Route Zero was published in partnership with Annapurna Interactive. This partnership will continue with the new project.
Fanbyte’s review of Kentucky Route Zero states that Jay Castello believes “The heart and soul of Kentucky Route Zero is its writing. The story is five acts and seamlessly combines prose, dialogue and inner thoughts with poetry, prose and dialogue. It also includes epistolary emails, newspaper clippings and epistolary emails. It draws from the rich history of southern Gothic literature, but its surrealism also has meaning. This makes it a great example of how to highlight labor inequalities and family tensions.
