It’s official: Bungie is acquired by Sony in a $3.7 Billion deal
It’s done — Sony has signed its agreement to acquire Bungie. The Destiny studio will now be an official member of the PlayStation team. The acquisition was announced in January. Sony completed the transaction with a $3.7 million price tag.
Both Bungie and Sony made their announcements via the usual social media channels. The numbers may seem slightly different from what you originally heard. This is because Bungie and Sony did indeed announce the sale via social media. IGN’s report about the deal stated that Bungie was valued at $3.7 billion by the SEC, not $3.6 billion. A cool $100 million difference although pennies compared with some but still a substantial chunk.
Even though May reports suggested that the agreement might have attracted the attention of the United States Federal Trade Commission, the deal was still approved. Although the SEC filing does not mention any specific reason, it does mention that Sony’s Bungie acquisition was completed earlier than expected. However, this inquiry could have added costs to the deal. Sony should be more transparent about how the agreement affects its finances prior to the original October-December expected timeframe.
The social media courting between Sony and Bungie is going well, but the platform holder has not been the most welcoming host. Bungie stated in its blog that Destiny 2 would continue multiplatform support, and also made a commitment for future titles to support cross-platform. Despite the positive news, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan irritated not only his employees but also potential employees with his deplorable internal email about abortion.
