Ewan McGregor has a message for toxic fans following the premiere of ‘Obi Wan Kenobi’
Last week was an exciting week for Star Wars fans. While the long-awaited Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere would have been enough to make fans excited, there was a Star Wars Celebration running and many major announcements. Are we all still recovering?
In case you didn’t see it Star Wars Jedi: Survival was released, and the first trailer of Star Wars: Andor also was released. When The Mandalorian returns for its third season are now known. Liam Neeson was also revealed to be the voice of Qui-Gon Jinn on Star Wars Tales of the Jedi. It was disappointing that some Star Wars fans” sent racist messages to Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Moses Ingram. Ewan McGregor doesn’t support this.
A video by Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan’s actor, criticised toxic Star Wars fans for their treatment Of Ingram, the series’ villain Reva. McGregor reminded Star Wars fans that there is no place for racism in the world and said that anyone who sent racist messages to Star Wars fans was “no Star Wars fan” in his mind.
McGregor stated, “This weekend Star Wars fans made Obi-Wan Kenobi one of the most-watched Disney Plus series premier ever and I would like to say a huge thank you.” This just shows how strong this family can be when we work together. It seems that some fans, this powerful fanbase have attacked Moses Ingram online, sending her the most hateful and racist DMs. It broke my heart to hear some of these comments this morning.
He continued, “Moses, a brilliant actress, and a brilliant woman, is absolutely incredible in this series.” She brings so many things to the series. It was so shocking to me that she had been involved in this franchise. As the executive producer and the lead actor of the series, I want to express my solidarity with Moses. We love Moses, and if she sends her bullying messages, I don’t think you are a Star Wars fan. This world is not a place for racism. “I stand in solidarity with Moses.”
Star Wars has been subject to toxic social media backlash for years. John Boyega (Finn), has openly shared his experiences with racist messages received from Star Wars fans. Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), and Daisy Ridley, (Rey Skywalker), have also spoken out about their experiences as victims of fan misogyny. It’s been something Star Wars has ignored in the past so this is a positive step to make Star Wars stand up for its actors. McGregor is correct: Racism is not allowed.
