Westwood Studios created the real-time strategy Dune computer game Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, which was published by Virgin Games in December 1992. It was also known as Dune II:
Battle for Arrakis in Europe and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis in the North American Mega Drive/Genesis port.
It is based on the 1984 film Dune, directed by David Lynch and adapted on the same-titled science fiction book by Frank Herbert. Although Dune II was not the first real-time strategy (RTS) video game, it did set the standard that would be used for many years to follow.
Dune II is therefore the quintessential “real-time strategy” game. It was a major success and established the groundwork for several games, including Command & Conquer, Warcraft, and StarCraft, by striking a balance between complexity and inventiveness.
