Overwatch 2 devs suggest priority around support heroes
We were treated to an in-depth AMA last night (June 22nd) by the developers of Overwatch 2 who answered some of the community’s biggest questions. Amongst the chaos, the dev team stated that support heroes would be “a focus” leading up to the game’s October 4th early release date.
The game’s systems designer, Gavin Winter, didn’t tiptoe around the fact that Overwatch was lacking in support role heroes, admitting the popularity of damage heroes meant they got priority. Having said that, he did state the following regarding the not-so-popular support role:
“We know that our support hero lineup needs variety and it’s a focus for us going forward, but we can’t abandon development of damage heroes given their popularity.”
Continuing in the Reddit Q&A, he goes on to say that, while hero roles will never be evenly numbered, a current goal for the new game is “having more support ASAP”.

Blizzard confirm Overwatch 2 support roles are “a focus”
The Reddit Q&A lasted around two hours and the development team answered some of the biggest questions the community had, including plans for the game’s MMR and upcoming changes to heroes including Symmetra.
Following on from the recent roadmap unveiling, game director Aaron Keller also stated that two of the next three heroes to be introduced will indeed be support roles. These new heroes are said to arrive after Season two – around 18 weeks after the game’s official launch on October 4th.
The roadmap goes into detail about how the game will offer something new on a 9-week basis. Fans of the game can expect new heroes, new skins, a couple of new maps, and some tweaks to existing heroes. Speaking of which, Keller also answered some questions about the changes expected for Symmetra, Moira, and Brigitta.
While Symmetra looks set to receive faster mobility for the competitive 5v5 mode, Brigitte will receive Ult changes – seemingly thanks to the ongoing discussions amongst players.
All being said, the game’s second PvP Beta will be going live on June 28th – with the second batch of codes going out around July 5th. The official Overwatch 2 release date looks set for October 4th (unless we see any major setbacks) and the new Watchpoint Pack is already available to pre order – giving you guaranteed access to the upcoming beta.
